My main interest is in understanding the constraints imposed by multi-phase fluxes of water and thermal transport on the extent to which a leaf can open its stomata and regulate transpiration effectively in the context of large variations in solar energy loading, ambient temperature, and humidity. To address these questions I use a variety of both field and lab-based experimental techniques to characterize the optical, thermal, hydraulic and structural properties of leaves, and combine these with both relatively simple mathematical 1D analyses of coupled heat and mass transport in porous, unsaturated media, as well as 3D numerical simulations. With collaborators, I am currently exploring 3D leaf structural information based on advanced imaging techniques, as well as biomimetic heat transfer applications where the ability of plants to recycle condensate under very negative water potentials is of interest.
